Hola a todos,
What a beautiful weekend! I know I am trying to full advantage of the cool weather and get outside as much as possible- I hope you are too. A peek at our week In our phonics program, Estrellita, students are already halfway done learning all of the initial sounds in the Spanish alphabet. This will create a strong foundation as they learn how to read and decode simple words in Spanish. In Writing, students are working on a book “Todo Sobre Mí” (All About Me) and learning the importance of using illustrations to convey meaning. In Reading, students will be reading and doing activities based on the story “Los Tres Cerditos” (The Three Little Pigs) this week. They will also learn about a new App they will use to read “good fit” books in Spanish called “Raz-kids” on our classroom tablet. In Matemáticas, students are learning counting strategies and are playing lots of partner games using dice and manipulatives. In Science, students continue to learn about trees. If the weather cooperates this week we will be making “bark rubbings” from our adopted trees and comparing and contrasting different tree species we have on campus. Additionally, Janet Kaplan, who works with occupational therapists in the district, will be working with our students on fine motor skills for the next four weeks. A letter explaining how she is supporting our students will be coming home soon! Action Items Please turn in field trip permission forms and payment ASAP. We have quite a few parents who are interested in being chaperones. We know many of you will have to adjust your work schedules to be able to join us, so we would like to choose our chaperones by end of the day on Monday 10/1. If you did not indicate on your child’s permission slip, please let us know if you would like to be a chaperone and included in the lottery ASAP. Scholastic Book Rewards! This week, your child will be coming home with at least one Scholastic Book Flyer. Many more titles, including several in Spanish are available online. https://clubs.scholastic.com/ Please order and pay online using our class code: MD2RM to order books and support our growing classroom library! Hola a todos,
¡Feliz otoño (happy fall)! It’s hard to believe that the first few weeks of school are already behind us. Your children are making friends and learning social and academic skills as we continue to practice all the new routines and procedures in kindergarten. We love hearing that students are counting and singing in Spanish at home! They really are little sponges and we are already seeing an increase in their Spanish language comprehension! Please encourage your child to share what they’re learning at home, even if it’s only one new word or phrase. We want them to feel empowered and excited about their growth as Spanish language learners. In an effort to minimize emails and keep all useful information in the same place, this newsletter and future newsletters will be posted on our classroom website: https://claypitkinderspanishimmersion.weebly.com/ A peek at our week In class we are learning a lot of school vocabulary (glue, markers, scissors, backpack, music, art etc) as well as vocabulary associated with numbers, colors and animals. We are integrating a lot of songs, games and total physical response (TPR) to make language learning fun and memorable. In Estrellita (our Spanish language phonics program) students are learning chants for the initial sounds of the letters in the Spanish alphabet. In Science we have started our “Tree and Weather” unit, observing trees in the school yard and learning vocabulary for the different parts of the tree (tronco - trunk, raíces - roots, etc). Encourage your child to make observations about the trees in their backyard or neighborhood! Action Items Picture Day is this Friday, September 28th! Don’t forget to submit photo order forms. We are excited to open a new listening center soon where students can listen to music and stories in Spanish independently. Please send students to school with headphones or earbuds (whichever is most comfortable for your child) in a bag labeled with their name by Friday, September 28th. Follow our classroom instagram page: Davis103_kinder where you can find pictures of our students learning and playing! This is a private account and only parents of the students in the class will have access to it. Upcoming events We are going on our first field trip on Wednesday, October 10th to Shelburne Farm! Please read the flyer coming home in your child’s folder Monday which will include details about cost and opportunities to be a chaperone. Did you know Claypit Hill has a service dog Jeannie? She will be visiting our classroom soon! Please let us know if your child has any dog allergies or is nervous around dogs so we can plan for that. In gratitude Thank you to Fiona Cullen’s family for sending in our September “plastilina” (play dough)! The students love using it to create letters, numbers, and shapes.
