Thank you for reading this week's newsletter- lots happening in salón 1! 1. Cold and flu season is (unfortunately) upon is! If your child is sick, please notify the office about their absence and the type of illness. This is confidential, but also helps us know what bugs are floating around so that we can keep everyone healthy and safe. Thank you for your support in this! 2. Thank you to all the parents and families who were able to join us on Friday morning for the feria de libros. The extra hands made all the difference and the students loved getting to see some familiar faces. 3. Friendly reminder that we will be celebrating “Pumpkin Day/Día de calabaza” on Thursday, October 31st. Please be sure to send all students in with a cantalope sized pumpkin and any other materials you may have volunteered for by Monday, October 28th. All parents are all welcome to join us in the gym at 8:30. **On Thursday, October 31st, students are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes! No weapons or masks allowed. 4. The kinder team is excited to invite all parents and families to a morning “drop in” on Friday, November 22 from 8:00-8:30. Students will be in charge of showing you around the classroom, teaching you a math game or finding a book to read with you. I am also excited to announce that Srta. Colon, who will be the lead teacher during my maternity leave, will also be there to meet you and join in the fun! 5.
This week's slideshow features día de peluche, "leo a mi mismo" and "la persona misteriosa," Fiona!

¡Hola a todos! This week we look forward to Loker's "feria de libros" (Book Fair). We will be visiting the Book Fair as a class on Friday, and are excited to check out the Spanish book options that will be available! We are also excited to teach the school the "Macarena de los meses" (Macarena of the months) at Thursday's all-school meeting. Feel free to come and cheer us on! So far in our phonics program (Estrellita) students have been learning about vowels "a" and "o" and some associated vocabulary (letra a: avión, alce, almohada, árbol) (letra o: oso, óvalo, olla, ocho). For the next two weeks, our focus will be on vowels "i" and "u." Students continue to grow their independent reading ("leo a mi mismo") stamina. In our social-emotional curriculum, Open Circle, we will be starting the second unit on "managing ourselves" (especially when experiencing conflicts or strong emotions). This will pair nicely with our work with mindfulness coach, Gabriel. Also, thank you to all parents who have already volunteered to help supply materials for kindergarten's "día de calabazas" (pumpkin day) on October 31st. Thank you to room parent, Kate Sambuco, for organizing! By Monday, October 28th, every child is also asked to send in a cantaloupe sized pumpkin to decorate! All parents are welcome to come and join in the fun with their child. We will be having the event in the gym, from 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM. *I will include another reminder in next week's newsletter as well* Check out our slideshow to see some highlights from this week including a visit from a Wayland firefighter! ¡Hola a todos! I hope that everyone is enjoying the long weekend with their family and friends!! I have continued to enjoy "parent/teacher conference season"! Looking forward to seeing many of you this week as well. On Friday your child brought home a letter and materials for a special project for El Día de Los Muertos. We have gone over a few examples of how to "disguise" the calaveras in class including mujer maravilla (wonder woman) and have also included a picture for your reference above. Most of the explanation was included in the letter, but please let us know if you have any questions about this! We will also be modeling the in-class presentations before the projects are due on Monday, October 28th. Last week we enjoyed a special visit from Laurel Pirelli, Loker's guidance counselor. She will be visiting our classroom once a month for a brief social-emotional lesson. This month her focus was on identifying the size of the problem and matching our reaction appropriately. For example, breaking a crayon is a small problem and only requires a small reaction. This is something we will work on and review all year in kinder! This week we look forward to a visit from Wayland's bomberos (firefighters) coming to teach us about Fire Prevention Week on Friday! Check out this week's slideshow to see lots of fun and learning at morning meeting, outside in the "Gaga Ball" pit and cheering and chanting our way through the Estrellita curriculum. ¡Muy buenos días a todos! Thank you for a wonderful first week of parent teacher conferences! Please continue to send in your "parent homework." You are the experts of your child and their first teachers, so I really appreciate your insight! This week: This week we will be diving deeper into the first letters and sounds in our phonics sequence (vowels "o" and "a"), continue to explore our school yard trees in Science and learn more about the important routines of Reader's Workshop! I did give the students a little homework to start teaching you our phonics chant in Estrellita which includes key words, sounds and movements. See youtube video for support: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUi-d8eQFpM Please note that we have picture day, bright and early on Tuesday (get those forms in!) and no school on Wednesday in observance of Yom Kippur. Please also be on the lookout for a project coming home with your child this week centered around El Día de Los Muertos. Friendly reminders: 1. Library books! In order to check out a new book from Loker's library each week, students need to remember to return the book they checked out the previous week! One mom shared at conferences that her child knows that her Loker library book needs to "live" in her backpack if they are not enjoying it! This week's slideshow includes rompecabezas de árboles (tree puzzles) in Science, math rotations Ben's 6th birthday, guest reader Rhandy and of course our field trip to Lookout Farm! ¡Hola a todos! If you've been keeping an eye on the forecast, you've probably seen that there's a chance of showers on Friday. We will keep you posted if we need to reschedule our field trip. Thank you to all parents who showed an interest in being a chaperone. I am excited to invite Alison Thompson (Connor’s mom), Deb Dyson-Diaz (Torin’s mom), and Kate Sambuco (Cole’s mom) to join us. There will be many more volunteer opportunities soon! This week we will continue to launch our Reader's Workshop, work on counting strategies in Math and finish the first stage in our Estrellita phonics curriculum. Recordatorios/Reminders 1. Field Trip Permission Slips! Due to our change in location, we need everyone's new permission slip signed and returned tomorrow, Tuesday, October 1. 2. Conferences! I will be sending home reminders the week before your scheduled conference. I look forward to meeting with each one of you and learning more about your child! Please remember to complete and share your "parent homework" assignment prior to your conference. I have really enjoyed reading them so far. This week's slideshow features number writing, read-alouds with Sra. Ramirez, our first visit from Gabriel (mindfulness coach) and learning about the xylophone en la clase de música :). I hope everyone is enjoying this unbelievably beautiful fall weather! The Oregon Ducks got the W in their first conference game, so if the Pats win today, we will be extra happy at my home this weekend :). This past week, students worked both independently and collaborately in Math rotations, started recording information in their Science notebooks, and experienced our formal Social Emotional Curriculum: Open Circle. Additionally, students learned almost half of the "key word/images" for our phonics curriculum: Estrellita (oso, avión, imán, uvas, estrella, mano, pez, sombrero, luna, tortuga, dedo, y ratón). After we introduce all of the key words, we will circle back and dive deeper into each sound and letter to create a solid foundation in their Spanish language skills. This week students will learn about the basics of "read to self", meet Gabriel Baldwin, our in house Mindfulness coach, and start learning more about fall and trees as part of our Science curriculum! Action Items/Reminders: 1. A permission slip for our upcoming field trip on Friday, October 4th to Honeypot Orchards will be going home with your child on Monday. Please return ASAP. We can invite two parents to join us as chaperones. If you would like to participate and have an up to date CORI form, please indicate so on the permission slip. Two parent names will be picked out of a hat - gracias! 2. Thank you to all parents who have signed up and confirmed their conference time! I will be sending home individual reminders as it gets closer to your conference. Do not forget to do and submit your "parent homework" prior to your conference! 3. Please continue the excellent communication about dismissal changes and absences! Be on the lookout: In an effort to bring more Spanish "home" with students to share with their families, students will be taking turns bring home some of our "mensajes de la mañana" and "preguntas del día" (matemáticas) on anchor chart paper. My hope is that students can take ownership of their learning by teaching you about some of the things we do together in class! Songs to practice at home: Here are some more songs that you can enjoy with your child at home: 1. Cabeza, hombros, rodillas y pies (x3) ojos, orejas, boca y nariz, cabeza, hombros, rodillas y pies! Ask your child how we make this silly/more challenging! 2. Yo me llamo (tune: Mary Had a Little Lamb) "Yo me llamo ___________ (your name)___________ (your name), _______________ (your name), yo me llamo __________,(your name) ¿Cómo te llamas tú? *This might be fun to sing around the dinner table with the whole family! 3. Buenos dias - Jose-Luis Orozco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-UXGWTEfEI This week's slideshow features playground fun, "choice time," Loker's Harvest Festival (thank you to Crosby's and Natalie's mom!), our first "persona misteriosa": Maya, and more! As things pick up speed, it may be harder to catch all these sweet moments, but we will continue to do our best! Muchas gracias to all families who were able to join us for our Noche de Currículo on Thursday. It is so wonderful to learn more about you as we get to know your child in class. Thank you for reviewing the information shared in the black folder and for getting started on your “homework assignment”! This gives me valuable insight and information about your child before we sit down for fall conferences. If you have not been able to schedule a conference yet, you will receive an email from me soon. I will also be sending home reminders when it gets closer to your scheduled time and date. Thank you to Leah Levine (mamá de Ellie) for sharing information about the recommended text, The Language Immersion Life by Millie Park Mellgren. I found this to be an enjoyable and easy read this summer, and those families new to language immersion education may find it helpful. I also hope to see many of you at tomorrow’s Wayland Carnival Day from 12-4 at the middle school as we celebrate Ellie y su hermanita Annie! I am crossing my fingers that some amigos de salón 1 get to dunk Señor Jones :)! This week we will be starting to use our Phonics curriculum Estrellita, learn about the "persona misteriosa" of the week and start small group math instruction and rotations! Special Events/Reminders for this week:
Parent/Teacher tip! If you are having trouble getting information about your child’s day at school, try asking very specific questions (i.e. “What game did you play at morning meeting? ¿Cómo se dice “red” en español? Who did you chat with during merienda/snack? How many days have you been in school so far? What did you choose to do/play during “choice time”? Parents also commented last year that the photos I share from the week helped to promote conversations about activities in class, and the friends students were making in school! Songs to practice at home: Although I do not claim to be a professional singer, I am more than happy to record some of the songs that we are learning and practicing in class! I have already reached out to a contact, but if you are tech-savvy and interested in helping us with this project, please let me know. I think it would be a great resource for families to have. Here are a few songs students have already been learning that also have links online:
This week's slideshow features lots of partner math games, outdoor Science lesson, guest readers Sra. Lepow (math coach) and Sra. Pirelli (guidance) y más! ¡Hola a todos! Welcome to our weekly classroom newsletter. Here you can find information about what's happening in salón 1, helpful reminders and some pretty awesome fotos of our classroom community. We started our year off strong with a four day week jam packed with learning and fun. Following the Responsive Classroom approach, we are slowly and deliberately introducing classroom procedures and routines to establish a strong foundation for learning in our classroom. Although Sra. Ramirez and I are using our "English necklaces" to introduce new routines, students have already been doing lots of counting, chanting, singing and listening in Spanish! This week we look forward to our first All School Meeting on Thursday, first outdoor Science lesson and learning new games during our daily Morning Meeting. Reminders: 1. It is very important that you review your child's blue folder/carpeta azul every day and clear out the section "guardar en casa/keep at home" so that things stay nice and organized. Thank you for signing and returning all important documents promptly! 2. This Thursday, September 12th, you are all encouraged to attend Curriculum Night from 7-7:30 in our classroom. I will be giving a short presentation with some important information about the school year and will be available for questions. Looking forward to seeing you then! 3. This year, on Wednesdays and Thursdays, we will share our special area class with Ms. DiStefano's Kindergarten class, so that our students have an opportunity to meet and mingle with new friends. Please see "clases especiales" schedule below to find out your child's schedule. Everyone will have tecnología/skills lab on Monday, gimnasia/gym on Tuesday and música/music on Fridays. This week's slideshow features lots of playground fun, exploring math manipulatives, and our first class birthdays! |
